2023 Evaluations Procedures
Evaluations primarily are based upon the 5 Tools that build a sound fundamental baseball player:
- Hitting for Average
- Hitting with Power
- Arm Strength (including pitching accuracy)
- Fielding Ability
- Speed
Hitter Evaluation:
Three separate evaluated stations:
- T-work warmup
- Rotate through 3 evaluated batting cages.
- The first evaluated station will be a batting tee. The metric of Exit Velocity will be determined. Going Yard evaluators will use a radar on each swing to determine the average EV of the players over 8 opportunities.
- The second hitting evaluation cage will feature x8 pitches provided by a coach underhand in “front toss” fashion. Mechanics, swing contact, as well as swing power will be evaluated.
- The third and final evaluation will feature x8 pitches overhand from a coach. Scored ranges for age group will be averaged into a 0 to 10 scale for mechanics, power, and contact for a total score of 30 points.
Pitcher Evaluation:
Three separate sessions, each session will consist of:
- Groups of 8
- Throw from 3 separate pitcher’s mounds at the appropriate age distance.
- 11U players will be required to throw 5 pitches per mound; 13U players will be required to throw 6 pitches per mound.
- Each mound will be evaluated out of 10 for mechanics, velocity, and control for a total of 30 points. The velocity will be calculated by skill shark for median bell curve in each age group.
Infielders Evaluation:
A single session consisting of:
- fielding at 2 infield positions; short stop and third base for all U11 players. We will include a glove-to-glove evaluation for 13U players. At the 13U level, left-handed throwing players will take their opportunities from the right side of the infield to make the glove to glove metric equal for both right- and left-handed throwing players.
- Infield stations will have 4 players at each station. Half at each position
- 4 consecutive opportunities at each position. Fielding opportunities will range the players to effectively evaluate the players ability to move to the ball.
- Balls will be regulated and thrown by a “hack attack” baseball machine.
- All throws to 1B, except for 13U left-handed throwers who will throw to 3rd base for the purpose of the glove-to-glove evaluation.
Outfielders Evaluation:
A single session consisting of:
- 8 opportunities to each player.
- Combination of all scenarios (fly balls; left, right, back, short, and grounders)
- The player will be evaluated for their overall mechanics while making the play, as well as their overall arm strength and accuracy while throwing to a target. 30 points
Speed Evaluation:
A single session consisting of:
- X1 run time from home to 1st base
- X1 run time from home to 2nd base
- X1 run time through “box drill” agility based drill
- Timing to begin on the movement of runner.
Team Selection:
The evaluation of players for the purpose of tiering shall be done by contracted third parties to ensure impartiality. The coordinator in consultation with coach selection committee shall help select the AAA/AA/A draft groupings based on evaluations. Designate coaches of AAA/AA/A teams shall have input into final rosters of their teams, through a draft process administered by a designated executive committee. 75% of the AAA team will come directly from the evaluations. If team is 10 players - top 8 make team, 11 players - top 8 make it, 12 players – top 9 make it, 13 players – top 10 make it). For 15U, the AAA head coach will pick remaining players from top 16 ranked players from the evaluation. For 13U and 11U, the AAA head coach will pick remaining players from top 18 ranked players from the evaluation.
If a potential coach has a child playing, he or she can only make the AAA team if they are ranked in the top 16 for 15U and top 18 for 13U and 11U.
After the AAA team has been selected the same formula/rules apply for AA if only 1 team. If more than 1 team, the teams must be divided as evenly as possible with alternating draft picks from the evaluation numbers. At older age groups it is rare to have more than 2 AA teams.
Where mutually agreeable, other team composition may be altered to reflect the wishes of parents, players and coaches at every age level but especially in Jr./Sr. Rally Cap and 11U.
